Re: What is faster?

RyanT,
My money is on the car with the automatic. Most non-professional drivers choke in a race and miss a gear. Just my $.02

Re: What is faster?

Wednesday and Friday nights are "run what you brung" (street night) at NED. Make sure your friends have helmets. They probably won't get to run against each other, but against the clock. They will give them a print out with the times and MPH for the 1/8 and 1/4 mile, plus their reaction time off the line (they use the .5 second IHRA tree)

And if you get bored at the track, there is a nudist camp behind the track (honestly). Have a good time. ;)

Re: What is faster?

Unless the turbo is stock I would go with it. Not enough info to make realistic guess. Whats the HP's and torqe comparison? I cant find the specs of either vehicle on the internet.

Re: What is faster?

Hmmm.
V4 Ranger?? Whazzat?

Rangers had 3.0L or 4.0L V6 engines. Do you mean a V6 4.0 liter with a turbo? That would be a BAD machine! Drove several stick shift Ranger V6 4.0, they are quick.

Four cylinder Rangers are 2.3 or 2.5 inlines, I think. Drove a 'Stang with a turbo 2.3 once. Ho hum.

I think the Chebby will be quicker than a 2.3 turbo four unless it has more goodies than just a turbo, but lost in the dust of a 4.0 liter turbo V6 Ranger.

Let us know. :)

Re: What is faster?

I think he's talking about an inline 4. If that's the case, the Ranger will go down.

I'd vote on the Chevy. The rangers are a bit heavy for a 4 banger. All the weight is in the front, not in th back where it's needed.

Re: What is faster?

The Ranger is a 4 cylinder 2.3, with a aftermarket turbo

Re: What is faster?

Something else to think about,

The Ranger has been lowered so much that we have to drive on the grass comeing in and out of the school parking lot because the speed bumps are higher then the bumper. If he was to get a flat tire in the back the bumper would touch the street, will this be a factor?

Re: What is faster?

The Ranger might as well stay home. It has already lost. ;) 2.3 liters is barely enough for a lawnmower, let alone a pickup truck. :)

Re: What is faster?

Ryan,

My guess is the Ranger has had a 1987 vintage 2.3 (inline) Turbo transplanted from a Thunderbird Turbocoupe. That would be impressive, at 190 HP! Problem is, how to get traction...
The cavalier 2.8 litre Z24's were never very hair raising.
I would say the automatic Cavalier will win, but there will be more smoke coming from the Ranger's tires.

Re: What is faster?

The cavalier is a total yawn mobile, V6 or not. It is also front wheel drive, if the driver isn't careful, he'll just make smoke as weight transer will unload his driven wheels. The Ranger is debatable. If the turbo was installed properly and not just hacked in, if he has airbag suspension that could be dialed in as far as height goes, maybe. If it is just a hack job lowrider that has no suspension, then probably not. Back in my lowrider days I had an 88 Isuzu extended cab with a 2.5 four banger. I lowered it for performance, still had full suspension, did a lot of tweaking of that little four banger, and that truck hauled arse. I had dreams of swapping in an Impulse turbo four, it was the same motor with a turbo, but that never happened. I certainly would have torn up a Cavalier as it was. I used to kill my buddy in his early 90s V6 Firebird (why would someone get that car with the V6?)all the time. I wouldn't count the Ranger out, but odds are what will happen on race day is the Cavalier will smoke off the line, and wind its way up the track, and the Ranger will probably not shift properly and will lose the race due to driver inexperience and/or crappy turbo/suspension setup. But hey, they'll have fun trying....

Re: What is faster?

The Cavalier won, but not by much.

The Ranger ran a high 17 and the Cavallier was a bit faster.

A 92 Base Escort 4 cyl 5 speed runs 17.5.
A 92 Hyundai 4 Cyl 5 Cyl Sonata runs 16.6.

Re: What is faster?

Chebby auto. The turbo is a great equalizer, but would be too slow to respond off the line.
