What exactly are the anodes purpose?

This is a funny thread... I've been seeing recently a lot of folks saying how aluminum anodes are such better performers than zinc anodes.... but in reality, zinc anodes still have their place, especially if a boat will be docked for a longer times, or in warmer, more tropical waters... worth a read:
