What does Disc Valve in Pressure tank do?

What does the disc valve do in pressure tank and will my tank work without one? IF not does anyone have one or know were I can get one with buying another Repair Kit?

The disk valve alone is part number 301802. I strongly suspect that it needs to be included within that assembly. I checked but I don't have any of them.
