What do these things do?

1989 Evinrude 40 hp. On both side of the lower gear case are 2 plastic screens held together by two screws. What are these screens and what is their purpose

I would post a picture to get a faster response. Sounds like your describing the water inlet screens....one on each side near the prop?

To keep weeds and other junk out of your water pump. Those are your water pump pick up screens.
