Re: Wellcraft 202 nova spyder repower

FINALLY!!!! My boat has an engine again, and also total new electrics. The Smartcraft sc1000gauges and the smartcraft link gauges are awesome! and especially the night vision of them! Everything from the electric seems to work nice, and i mean both the new sensors installed for the smartcraft interface (pitot signal, depth transcuder, padle wheel, trim gauges, fuel sender etc) and also the rest of the electric equipment kile the blower, the bilge pump and the lights. To be honest i was afraid if the electric stuff would work properly because i changed the whole wiring behind the instrument cluster, and also i changed the whole wiring harness of the boat, installing the total new style 10-pin engine to helm harness with new key switch and lanyard swich. I have made also myself for the first time the outdrive maintanance. New belows, new water pump and also i installed the drive lube monitor kit, since my new engine has this system but my alpha drive had not, and i was pleased to have it. SO, everything is perfect, But I still have one problem before i start the the engine! I can NOT ALIGNE THE ENGINE!!! I first put the rear mounts at the gimbal with the fiber washes, but i can not find the exact height of the front mounts, so to allow the aligment tool to slide till the end. The best i have manage to do untill now is to fit the tool not to the end. I still need about 3cm so the big diameter of the tool reach the bearing.
Any tips for help please!! Is it true that the large diameter of the aligment tool MUST reach the gimbal bearing or am i push it to far??
Thank you very much. I will soon post some photos from the installation!!!

Re: Wellcraft 202 nova spyder repower

Thank you very much! I really love it !I will make one last attempt to allign the engine myself with this information you gave me in the previous posts. Otherwise tomorrow i will call a technician to allign it for me. Besides, i have to fit the shift and throtle cables at the shift plate, before start the engine. So i beleve that probaply Sunday or Monday...the engine will wake up for it's first time. I hope everything is still fine!! I will keep posted and after everything is done i will post some photos to tell me your opinion!
Thank you again, you have really help me a A LOT during the whole procedure!!!!

Re: Wellcraft 202 nova spyder repower

I MADE IT!!...i allign the engine. The aligment tool slide till the end inside the coupler and the teeth of the coupler are equal at the grease i aplyied at the aligment tool. I will fit the drive probably tomorrow and this week i will start it!!So far , so good! The mistake i have done with the aligment was that i put the washer between the gimbal and the rear mounts and not the FIBER washer. So the engine was lower than it should be. So today, as soon as i realize my mistake, i went at the boat , jumped in, switch the washer with the fiber washer, i lowered the front mounts and voila........after 10minutes of small corrections, the aligment tool sliped firmly and till the end inside the coupler!

Re: Wellcraft 202 nova spyder repower

I have a question. Till now i thought that the new sterndrives have as standard equipment the new oil drain system with a hose that can easily drive the oil out of the boat. But mine has not it. It has only the singe point water drain system but not the oil drain system. Is there anything i can do? Finally this system is not standard equipment at 2009 350 mag mpi?

I found some info for you that I believe might help you out here.

EASY OWNERSHIP
3-year/300 hour maintenance interval on many periodic service items saves time and money
Convenient top-mounted remote oil filter and threaded dipstick tube make oil changes cleaner and keep periodic servicing quick and simple
Color-coded service points makes checking fluid levels simple and straightforward
Operates on easy to find, less expensive 87 octane fuel
Engine-mounted drive lube monitor for easy lube check or add from inside the boat
All models come with simple to use water drain systems designed for many boat applications
http://www.mercurymarine.com/engines/inboards/sterndrives/mpi350_features.php

If you do not see #22 [in the link below] Either mounted to the bottom of the oil pan or the hose laying in a bag as a kit Then I do believe mercruiser was thinking of doing away with this oil hose drain system. Even though it seems like a good idea, It did have a lot of complaints of taking a long time to drain with cold oil. And as I look around for any newer info with out calling mercruiser, I do not see mercruiser talking about the oil hose any more, It looks like Now they are talking about the threaded dipstick tube to drain the oil like i posted above;) In the past as a dealer we would get the boat with the oil hose mounted to the engine and the normal drain plug would come in A bag with the owners manual.
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...nbr=12840&bnbr=140&bdesc=Oil+Pan+and+Oil+Pump

Now if it did not come with the engine and you really wanted to add it, Then here is the part number as a hole kit for you're new engine, Not broken down like in the link I posted showing #22. Oil hose kit part# 32-865281A02 $82.42.:)

:confused:What is the treated dipstick tube? Where can i see at the engine to see if it has this tube? I am wondering if you mean the tube that iside has the motor oil indicator?...This system has also and my old (1993) 5.7LX mercruiser. I fit there the oil drain pump and manualy take off the oil. You mean this system...this is old...

Right, If they did not send you the oil hose, Then That should mean they are going back to the old way of changing the oil, And that is by sucking it out the oil dipstick tube [or as you know it the oil indicator] That is as long as the oil indicator to you has the yellow handle at the end and you need to pull the stick out to check the oil level.

So i will have to change oil with the old way....I have the manual pump to drain the oil but i want to ask if there is any more modern way to drain the oil....like an electrivc pump or something like this? I found that in the internet..... http://cgi.ebay.com/Automatic-Elect...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5d271dac69
Will it work?...and something else...what exactly engine oil shall i use and every when must i change it. Mercury sais enery 300hrs or every 3 years....am i correct?

I use a vaccum pump (Topsider) and it works pretty well...I took the plastic lines that came with it and replaced them with one that does not kink and I fabbed up an attachment to use the threaded connector on the end of the dipstick tube....as far a oil with a new Merc engine you probably should use the Merc 25/40 stuff or you can use straight 40 for temps above 50 degrees....and change it once a season when you winterize the boat....every 300 hrs is way too long...more like 100 hrs is about right...new oil and filter and also at the same time change the oil in the outdrive and check for water in the drive oil...replace the gaskets for the drain and fill plugs too when you do the drive oil....

As far as that single point drain system...I would not trust it because if any rust particles clog the lines you can still have water in there that will freeze and crack the engine block...if you are in Greece and are boating in salt water I'd put closed cooling on it rigt away before you even run it in salt...it costs more but is well worth it in that you have antifreeze in the block/heads and even manifolds if a full closed system...the cost of the closed cooling will be offset by the fact that the boat will be worth more to any buyer who knows what they are looking at if you are boating in salt water...

Re: Wellcraft 202 nova spyder repower

Concerning the 300hrs or 3years oil change, i think that is a little bit risky. I think that i am going to change the oil and oil filter every 2 years (about 150hrs). Besides this is not big expense and it is worth it. The oil shall be fully synthetic i think 20-40...according to Mercruiser.
When i winterize the boat, i use to empty the block from the water and operate the engine for about 30minutes with fresh water. I think that this is enough, and so i did not buy the engine with the closed cooling kit. Although i beleive that it is worth it's money. Do you know please every when must we change the exhaust manifolds and risers at this engine?...and something else.....maybe this question seems to be a litthe stupid.....do you know if i will need any specific adapter or assembly to connect the engine with the fuel hose coming from fuel tank?...also i beleive that i will connect it at the fuel filter just like my old engine...am i right?....this is the last thing to do, with the impeller change , to start the engine for the first time.....Now i am reading this post i feel a little bit stupid...you see i have done the whole thing alone and i am now asking how to fit the fuel hose to the engine.......
Thank you very much!

I'm not sure about that pump in you're link But some stores have discontinued selling a 12 volt oil pump similar to that style, And it costed somewhere around $20.00-$30.00 or so I believe, And to be Honest it did not work the greatest, And since that time, [At least the west marine stores] Have stopped selling it because most everybody was wanting to return the pump because of all the problems they had with it. If you have A pump that works good then you may want to just keep using it, Or the other 2 pumps shown would do good also. Keep in mind the easiest way to suck the oil out is when the oil is hot, It will be out in no time at all with any pump.:)

As far with the engine oil, If you can not run the mercruiser 25/40 Then you will be safe to run a good brand of 30w or 40w. [FYI] I have been told by a mercruiser tech support guy over the phone that the oil that comes in a new engine from GM comes with 30w in it from the factory, Then after that mercruiser would rather you put in their 25/40 oil, But if you can not get that oil for what ever reason, Then 30w or 40w will work fine, Also as a [FYI] Volvo pentas recommendation is to run 30w also.;) But it's up to you On what you want to run, Just keep your receipt of the oil And filters for warranty if needed.;)

As far as the time frame for oil changes, Mercruisers recommendation is to do a 20 hours service, Then after that you should do it every 100 hours or once a year what ever comes first, And some guys that are really maintenance conchesness and runs their boats hard will change the engine and drive oils around every 50 hours or so.

And also you have a private messages from me:)

Re: Wellcraft 202 nova spyder repower

YESSSSSS......the engine started.....Everything is just perfect!!
I own you some photos ......especially now that there is nothing in the boat except the engine, the helm and the smartcraft gauges.Everything seems to be fully operated...the shift cables adjustment(no ugly noises during gear engagement) smooth drive operation under gear( to check as far as i can the engine aligment), the impeller...everything! To be honest i did not expect not to have any problems....since everything started from the begining.I mean both mechanical and electric staff. The engine worked for about 15minutes at idle and about 5 minutes at 1300rpm (ithe boat is still off the water), the operation temperature climb very fast till the 165deg F. and it stayed there....What is the operation temperature when the boat runs?....second...the oil pressure was at about 30psi at idle and 60psi at 1300rpm...could you please tell me the range of it?And something last.....the water pressure, i think this is the water coming from impeller had only 1.3-1.5 psi of pressure. Is this normal?...but the exhaust throw water normally...
Can you please send me (someone....) something which refers the operation range of basic factors of the engine?
Thank you very much!

Make sure you read your owners manuals:D See section 4 engine specifications, Oil pressure and water temp is in there.

You have a 160* degree thermostat so the range is around 160* up to 175*ish.

Your Oil pressure is within normal range of what you posted.

And with the water pressure, It sounds about right for running it on the garden hose, But you will get your true readings while on the lake by sucking the water and not forcing the water through the system.

Re: Wellcraft 202 nova spyder repower

Well, i have a problem......I went to the boat to install the transom shower, and i saw that the exhaust below had sliped out. I had the drive at the trailer (full up) position. So instead of installing the transom shower i pull off the drive so to put again the exhaust below. I put it on and after about an hour ( i had already lifted full up the drive),the exhaust belows sliped out again! What am i doing wrong?.... I did not put adhesive inside the below, i put the expander tool at the first convolution. The below started to slip to bell's flange and after i put the tool at the third convolution. I pull the bellow until i could fit the rod pin at the tool and make it steady. And then i tightened the clamp. Then i trailered (full up position) the drive and after an hour the below was off the position. I saw that the bell's flange is not straight but conical. That is why the below slips as soon as i tight the clamp. Do you have any idea to put the below secure?
Thank you very much!

I'd just go with the exhaust tube instead. Seems infinitely easier to install. Good luck!
