Welding the forward and clutch dog?

I have a 1977 Evinrude 25hp, the forward gear and clutch dog is stripped.
Is welding the gear and clutch together possible? is there any downsides?

it will be in gear all the time then. A good used lower or gears is the way to go

Now I've heard it all. Oh well, if that is what you want to do, how about finding a piece of pipe or conduit or something that will just fit between the dog and reverse gear? Then the dog can't get away from the forward gear. Just a thought, I've never done such a thing.

If you want to go through with it you can use one of those spring loaded folding trolling plates to block the prop thrust at low RPM.

I'm not disreaging the safety standpoint of an in gear always motor --- nuff said about that already...

It would be a bear to weld. They've been soaking up oil all their lives. I doubt you'd ever get them clean enough. At a minimum, i think you'd need to grind a bevel on them and make multiple passes to get decent penetration. If you TIG'd them and flooded them with Argon from the back side you might get away with it. If someone brought it to me and asked me to weld it I'd turn the job down. I'm just a pretty good welder not a great one.

If you're figurning cost as T&M vs new parts I'd think you'd be near even but if its a case of having a welder and good skill vs having dollars for food vs. boat parts then what the heck, give it shot.

I think it would be better to just flip the clutch dawg or buy a new one. It's not good to cut corners on your equipment.

Hey I feel your pain, I have lived on a island off the Alaska mainland for the last 30 years,, pre-internet /www.com no omc shop here. I have done many things folks would cringe at to make an old kicker kick. ..I know of a fellow here on the island who made a water pick-up tube from a hollow wooden plant stem just to get back to town, he swears it worked? I have seen a outboard with a 12v electric fuel pump used to pump water to the power head . I have seen several outboards rigged for gravity feed, gas tanks mounted on the cowl or to a pipe above the outboard, sometimes you gotta "make it work, I loved the trolling plate idea! judge ye not bro

I had gear, dog and linkage issues on my '59 Fat Fifty. I picked the best side of the dog and the best gear for forward and adjusted the heck out of the linkage, for forward. I ended up with forward and neutral. Just remember to come into the dock slowly, and put her in neutral at the right time and grab the dock. Piece of cake

OK - If you're on a an island with no internet and it's a mater of life and death. Maybe. But since that's probably not the case, a 25hp without neutral IMHO is an accident waiting to happen.

Oh, I don't know. They made big outboards without neutral or reverse for many years before they became commonplace in the 1950s. Not to say folks didn't end up in the drink occasionally when the motor took off while they were starting it, etc., but people still do dumb stuff now with all of the "dumb" engineered out of the outboard

a 25hp without neutral IMHO is an accident waiting to happen.

Well heck, take a look at the Big Fours and Storm Boat Motors built around the WWII era. A 60 cube motor direct drive? A load of fun that would be.

Take a look in the "Top Secret File" and there is a list of salvage yards mixed with dealers that can help you out. You could also look on eBay too. Some good research can help you get a good price on the parts you need.

Never heard of welding them together?!? I'm not sure you could start it and if you did, you better hold on cause you're taking off, oh and no REV :/ I just got an entirely new/old complete gear set for my' 66 20 hp with prop shaft, FWD/REV gears and clutch dog for under $100 with shipping. I'm not sure if he has anymore, but I got my stuff from Bobby at BLC Marine. Here's his info:
