weak to intermitted spark 1996 112 Evinrude

I couldn't get motor started so I tested the spark with timing light and 3 of 4 cylinders sparks were both weak and intermitted. Could this be the power pack. I move the coils around to different cylinders but same result with timing light thats why I am leaning toward power pack? Any help would be greatly appreciated
I pulled all 4 plugs and they are all getting fuel and plugs are new and gapped properly

I'd say buy an open air gap spark tester at the local parts house for around $10.00, set it to 7/16" open air gap and then check your spark. It could be the pack but there are other components in the ignition system that can also cause this. Wouldn't be a bad idea to get an OEM factory service manual if you're going to do this work yourself.

will do and I do have a selco manual. I rebuilt this engine earlier this year and had it running a few weeks ago. The timing was off so I timed it with timing light. When I went to start it again to double check timing and idle the battery was dead. now it wont start due to weak intermtted spark as i said i determined this with timing gun. I will purchase spark tester and check again. Thanks

just a thought here. Check your fly wheel key and make sure you did not shear it from improper fly wheel nut torgue. This will throw the timing off just enough to have you chasing your tail for hours.

Thanks for the info just checked that and it seems to be intact. I am not sure if the timing is off because i can't seem to get it started to double check the first adjustments i made after rebuild.

That engine must turn over at least 200-250 rpm when cranking to fire the ignition system. If the battery is weak and cranking rpm's are down, that could be the problem.

I did try it with a fully charged battery as well and still had the same problem.

Thanks for all the info thats what is great about this sight, between everyone's experience we will eventually solve my problem. I will test spark this week end and get back to everyone

Thank You everyone, I got it started and timed it. It runs super. It was indeed just a low (bad) battery.

I am wondering how you determined spark was weak with a timing light????
