Weak tell tale on muffs?

How strong should the tell tale be on muffs?

I rebuilt the lower seals over the summer and was overheating while out on the water the first trip out. The tell tale was strong under load but still had the buzzer, stream was warm to touch but not scalding. It sputtered out and was weak at idle.

Figured okay, I’ll put a new impeller in. Put everything back together and lower back on with a new rubber grommet on the water pipe, ran on muffs but I’m not sure how steady stream it should be at idle.

This is kinda similar to how it was in the water when it overheated. Just slightly sputtery. Any ideas on if this is normal on muffs if I should pull the lower back off to check anything before I head to water to test again

What condition was the old Impeller?
What Engine is that, one of those 4 cylinder Loopers?
As for the Stream. Bad Camera Angle, and Focal Length/Distance, but it appears to be Solid right at the discharge.
I suspect the Engine is not holding a steady Rpm, but jumping around, and that can create differences in the Water Pressure being supplied to the Engine.
As for normal on the Muffs? Air can get in if the Muff Cups aren't completely sealed. In addition is there enough water being supplied through the Hose? Not just Pressure, but Volume
Perhaps try running it in a Barrell, just make sure the Water comes up high enough to submerge the Pump.

The old impeller wasn’t bad, definitely not the reason for the overheat. Something must have occurred either while sitting over the winter, or when putting the power back on after the seal job. I was thinking maybe the water tube misaligned but I imagine then I wouldn’t see water from the pisser at all and it’s already hard enough getting the shift shaft aligned. It’s a 2 stroke 4cyl 2+2 115 mercury. This was right after cold start so it was jumping around at idle a bit. The muff cups are kinda crappy. Maybe should just put it in the water to check.

My 115 Mariner peed pretty steady on the hose but I had a good quality set of muffs. I had to get a trough for my Yamaha F150, even good muffs weren't enough.

All things considered it could be my muffs. I am just going to pop the lower back off and make sure the water tube didn't get pinched / folded over and then take it to the water for the test. I installed the grommet onto the copper water tube first but it appears I should install that onto the water pump and then install the lower, so will try that and then hit the water. The lower did have about 1/4 inch left that it wouldn't "pop" flush into place so maybe the water tube is slightly off

Yes the Grommet is supposed to be placed in/on the Pump. A bit of Dish Soap can be used as a Lubricate to make it easier to install it, and the Tube. Also works well for installing the Impeller.
