I filled the transom in last night and used poly resin and wood flour. It seems to have left a few mil thick layer of what appears to be wax. It is hard as a rock under this layer, but what do I need to do before glassing this over??

Wax isn't that thick so it's hard to say, did you use waxed resin? Just grind the surface to remove it.

Im not sure if it is waxed resin. I think it will gum up the grinder? Will waxed resin leave this type of skim coat on it??? Thanks for the reply!

Sounds like you used finishing resin (with wax). It should wash off with soap and water. If not, try acetone.

I have read about epoxy, and like what I have read, but I wanted to use the 3 gals of poly which was pretty much given to me.
Do you know if the BONDO type of resin is waxed? I also have a gallon of that here. I will probably switch to epoxy, because I do not want to have to clean it off before sanding/grinding. It will make for 2 times the work. Maybe I will use it (waxed)to make a livewell, or something.

I am a pretty new poster, on the board. You guys rock!! I have read the threads on here for months, I thought I knew alot! WOW there is still alot I need to learn from this place! I appreciate all the help I have gained from this place!

Time to find some good epoxy now! ;)

No it won't leave that kind of surface, normally it's not even really noticeable, the only reason you know it had wax is that it's tack free. Without seeing it first hand it would be difficult to say what it is, but it will need to be removed.

I wash off the anime blush (wax coating from EPOXY) with just dish detergent and garden hose. Dries clean and totally non-sticky. If you recoat with epoxy within 24hrs, you generally do not need to sand between coats. READ THE DIRECTIONS ON THE LABEL!!!!!

Also, using a grinder to remove any wax buildup on either epoxy or poly is a very bad idea. The reason being that the grinder will just smear and push the stick stuff into the clean ground surface, making it hard to get a good bond between coats. Wash off, then grind to get rough surface if you want it.

YEA you clean the surface between coats , its has to be clean overtime !!! I used acetone to clean !!!! and in his question it was POLY !!! it has a heave wax !!!! dont it !! John

yes....the bondo resin is waxed...

that surface must be ground off before you add another layer.....forget washing or aceitoning.....that will only work with epoxy.....

wax is a release agent.....any lamination to it (using poly) will not bond well.

and remember.....if you switch to epoxy....you cant go back to poly....

that means......epoxy will stick to poly....but poly wont stick to epoxy

Tried the soap and hot water trick! No workey! I grabbed a rag and some acetone and soaked it for about 10-20 seconds which softened it up a lil, then I rubbed 95% off. I guess I will use the grinder to clean it up and clean again with acetone.

Why does the resin have this wax in it? It is nothing but a pain. I could see using it for molds or something like that, but it is just a PITA. I got it from a auto paint supplier who is a friend of mine. I asked him if it was waxed and he said "I dunno". Then I informed him that it was indeed waxed! I wanted to use resin for this project because of the small size and cost factor. It will be kept in a garage and maybe used once a month. I use my Key Largo most of the time. This 14 footer is just for getting into the flats.

Is there a resin out there which will not produce this waxy film when cured?

Here is what it looks like now after cleaning/grinding. I will be tabbing it in and glassing probably next week. I need to get a few stringers with knees for transom support in there before I start the glassing though!

This pic is looking straight down the transom corner on the starboard side!

When you talked about wax coming to the surface I didn't even think about un-waxed resin being gummy on the surface, it's normal and good.

So the thin gummy layer can be glassed right over?? I did not need to grind it off? It feels like a sticky clay like residue! Will this stuff harden over time?

Well, I just ordered the 3 gallon kit for starters from USCOMPOSITES earleir to remedy this problem. I can tell just by reading that this (epoxy) IS the way to go. I also ordered some glass bubbles and cabosil. I think things will go better in the long run with the epoxy! Thanks for helping me decide guys! Time to decide how to do the floor support/stringers. Plywood, PVC, bow to stern, side to side. Im still trying to figure out that one!

I did find out I forgot to round one side of the transom. The glass would not lay flat and I had some bubbles which were ground out and kinda feathered out. I think this is going to be a very long project! But I want to make sure it is done right the first time!
