Water to impeller

When connected to muffs, should the garden hose pressure deliver water to the impeller/ engine before starting? I was getting no water flow in apparently , I shut down after approx 30 seconds when impeller pump wasn’t cooling to the touch. I ultimately disconnected the hoses working my way back to the connection before oil cooler and still no water in. I ran garden hose back flushing and it comes out through out drive I takes... I’m stumped at why it would go one direction only-backwards. Thanks!
5.0 gxi SX out drive.

Make sure your muffs are tightly gripping and are lined up squarely on top of intake ports on lower unit. You can bend muffs together before installing to make sure you get a tight fit.

After install I make sure water hose is cut full open so you've got lots of water available and that its exhausting excess around muff drive contact patch. After that short of having a bad impeller you should have plenty of water available to engine impeller and it should cool engine fine.

I have same engine/drive combo and its works well on muffs. Following steps above insures you have more available water at higher pressure than passive no pressure drawing out of lake/ocean that the impeller is use to.

You have the hose on full, right? And yes, it will spray all over until you start the motor

if you pull the line from the PS cooler to the raw water pump and nothing comes out, look for plastic debris in the oil cooler

Does your motor have the blue flush port/ If so, use it instead of the muffs.
