Water pump

I'm changing my impellar and the manual im using has conflicting pictures. How many plate gaskets are there? One pic shows one below the plate and the other shows gasketes above and below?

I don?t know the answer or the model of you engine but you could go to one of the online parts suppliers and look at the diagrams. This one is for a 1998 75 hp Force. http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/2534_18.cfm

By the looks of it there is one below the faceplate and one above. I have only ever replace the one above the faceplate as the faceplate was OK and didn?t need to be removed.

If you did not have a good seal under the stainless plate then the pump could suck air when the pump was above water level ( on the plane)

Oh yeah that helps...its a 1989 force 125hp
