I have a 78 4hp Evinrude that took a little tinckering to get going, runs fine and pushes water out through the exhaust on the drive shaft but wont send it to the head to cool the motor, gets very hot only after runing for 1 min. What do I check for?

You may have a clog in the cylinder head water passage. You might pull the powerhead to make sure the base water passages aren't clogged too.

You may have a weak water pump? If so, replace it.

checked water pump and it seems fine, impeller in good shape. the motor is pushing water out the exhaust holes on the drive shaft. can i try blowing air down through the head where the line comes out at the top for the cooliant or is that a bad idea? is there a quick fix for uncloging a blocked water line or should i just tear the motor and unclog it that way?

It may be loosing water on the way up.
Water tube not in pump housing, bad water tube (hole in it)
Or bad top or bottom grommets?
