water pump impeler

How do I get the old impeler off of the shaft in an 89 A1 Merc? Its like its welded it self on there. No matter how much force i put on it its stuck. my next step is the torch or is that a bad idea. the impeler is totally shot theres not one fin left, found out the hard way up river. Had to row back to the truck. but whats a day of boating with out adventure?

I wouldnt heat it, but others may tell you its ok. Just use a VERY sharp chisel and a small hammer. once you have it off replace entire water pump assembly since you might damage the lower housing with the hammering.

Will the chisle just cut through the metal ring that the rubber is mounted to? I was alittle apprehensive about heat as well.

No heat..it will melt the seals under the impeller..

You could use a Dremel with a cut off wheel and carefully split the impeller.It should then just pull off.

The chisel method is actually described in the manual.
