Needing to change the water pump...what is the easiest way to access? Do I need to remove the prop unit or is there an access panel on the side of the unit? Any help would be appreciated. My top piston got to hot due to the water pump not pumping enough water.

Check to see wether or not you have a Slide lever for your shifting with a cotter pin (front side of shaft housing) or its bolted or it could be a gear shaft inside the lower unit (which then you wouldnt see it from the outside). If its external you need to separate it and then take the bolts holding the lower unit in place. There will also be one under the anode too. Have someone help you while you remove the last bolt so it dont drop down or use a hydraulic jack. Then slide it out and your pump wil be ontop of the lower unit. Make sure you DO NOT LOSE the steel space or the rubber grommet. If yours comes equipped. Check the shaft for them and also up into the case to see if the rubber grommet might have stuck up in there. Pull it out and place back onto shaft.

Check the iBoat store for the part numbers. If you order from it you wont need to worry, if you get the impellar locally you will need the Mercury part #. Not a Force. I am doing the same thing right now since it does not pump enough water pressure at idle and I needed the Mercury number. Luckily I didnt need an impellar kit since it doesnt have gaskets and a plate.

The lower unit must be removed.
The water pump is located on the top surface of the lower unit.

Best done with a Clymer Force repair manual in your other hand.

Thanks for all your help...any suggestions on changing out a piston? Is it an okay operation for a shade tree mechanic? Or should it be left to a professional? Just need to change out the top piston, it didnt get enough water hence the changing of the water pump as well...

If you have not scored the cylinder, you can replace the piston without disassembling the engine. It's not easy but it is do-able. I have done it on four cylinder engines.

First remove the reed plate and using a 1/4 inch drive 12 point socket, (3/8 won't fit) remove the rod big end cap screws. push the piston and rod out after removing the head. The rollers will fall out so be careful and retrieve all of them from the block. Putting it back together is the difficut part. use a lot of grease to hold the rollers and cages. Put them in after pushing the rod onto the crankpin and roll them around it until you get all in. The rod cap is difficult to get in and you must fish it around some. Then insert the cap screws and check for rod cap alignment and torque down the cap screws. If you buy a WISECO piston, you don't need tools. It comes complete with rings, wrist pin, and circlips. You do need to buy their bearing kit for an extra 12 bucks. I've heard some people say bad things about WISECO pistons but I have never had any trouble with them, so you pays your money, and you takes your choice.

If the cylinder is scored, you need to rebore and this requires complete disassembly. You only need to do the one cylinder because aftermarket pistons are balanced to factory weight and even at an 030 overbore(max recommended by factory) the engine will not see any significant increase in displacement on that cylinder. If you have worked on auto engines, this will be a piece of cake for you.

If you need more than 030, there are sleeves available to re-line this engine but you need to find a marine machine shop to do it. it is not cheap -- probably 250 labor plus part.
