I have 6 water pump bolts that are 1/4" - 20 thread. The manual I have says only alternately and evenly, nothing about torque.

The back of the manual have torque specs for standard nuts and bolts.

Says for 1/4" 60-80 In Lb ( 5-7 Ft Lb). Is this right torque for the water pump bolts?

BTW, its for the 90's Evinrude 25HP im working on right now.

Thanks,
DamianJP

id go 60 inch pounds its on the small ish side and you dont wanna ring it off - i have a neat trick i learned working on aircraft .... i have a 3" long 1/4" drive ratchet and i use that for tightening the small bolts up to 3/8" i grab it by the head and turn it untill my wrist hurts a bit thats usually plenty tight enough -though i do have an inch pound torque wrench but you can do that on every bolt its too time consuming

Thank you Levi.

Have to keep that trick in mind. Although I like to use the torque wrench and get the "click". I tend to get "OCD" on tightening nuts/bolts and go to far by feel. But it would be nice to get the feel, like with your trick , it would make the jobs alot faster like you said. Little tricks of the trade are priceless information.

Thank you again,

Theres something else I have noticed that not many people do. Anytime you install steel in to a softer alloy, I always use a lubricant 20/50 castrol motor-oil in squirt can to apply small amount to threads so they don't gull up the threads and cap where it meets application. Other than that Damian, I can,t see anything wrong not using a torque wrench as long as you work from the center out and have the feel for it. Otherwise, use one. You don't want to be repeating repairs again because you didn't take the time to do it right! Good luck!
