Water Pressure Line?

I have a 2002 Bigfoot 60 hp on an '08 Sun Tracker pontoon. There is a gauge on the helm and according to the boat's manual, it is for engine water pressure. There is a white plastic line that runs from the back of the gauge to the back of the boat. It appears to be chewed off by a visiting mouse at that point. Where does it connect to the motor and what's it for? There is no engine temp light or gauge. There is a connector at the front of the engine on top of the cavitation plate with a very short piece of similiar size hose attached. Is this where it goes?

Re: Water Pressure Line?

The one you found is the speeddometer there should be another one just like it comming out of the cowling usually near the front. But that is only if it was actually installed in the first place. Just because you have a gauge doesnt mean the engine was setup to work with it.

The boat doesn't have a speedometer. The center gauge is a multi-gauge with a tach, trim, and water gauges. The plastic hose connects on the back and runs to the back of the boat. The boat came factory equipped with the same motor, except it was an '08 model.

Sorry for not gettig back sooner. Your 02 may have a l/u pickup for the speedo that is usually what it is when it comes from the l/u because water pressure taken at that point makes no sense for ensuring cooling.

Water pressure needs to be checked at the last possible point in the cooling circuit which is usualy where your tell tale tube connects. The water pressure gauge tubing usually exits the from the front of the engine lower cowling area or at the provided grommets for controls or electrical. It will be 1/4" tubing and you can use a standard drip irrigation tubing conncector to splice it to your gauge tubing.

If your engine does not have a pressure tube on it already you can add it with a kit available through Merc or many aftermarket resources.

Just as a side note, the tubing has a certain amount of water in it but only at the very begining. The gauge itself works on the pressure of the air trapped in the tube just like a marine speedo does.
