Water in my cylinder!

I've got a 1971 merc 39. Just ran it today and noticed water dripping from the spark plug followed by sputtering and then it quit. Is there a head gasket on this?

OK. With a little research, I discovered it's 1968 merc 39. If water is leaking into the cylinder would this be caused by a failed powerhead gasket?
