I have a mercruiser 250 straight six. I just bought the boat and was told that it runs. I found alot of water in the oil. I can tell that it is well worked into the oil. the head was cracked. If I were to just replace the head and not look underneath am i likely to have more complications? the engine supposedly ran good the last time it was used last year.

When you take the head off look at the cylinders, me that whole motor should be opened up.

Well, yes. you probably will.

First of all you'll need a service manual. Go up to the "ADULTS ONLY" sticky and do a little reading. Find your manual and do some more.

If the head was cracked and it allowed water into the oil and that water sat there all winter or longer there may be a lot of corrosion in the cyls and other places.

You also may have a cracked block and manifold too.

I hope you didn't pay much for that boat.

Ayuh,... I'd Sooner think the Block is Cracked, rather than the Head....
