This post is meant to assist anyone who is having a similar issue, please correct or add to anything !!
1996 182 Crownline with 4.3 Merc Alpha 1 drive:
Has been a great boat, I have owned it 5 years, replaced the Mercruiser ignition system with Delco Marine the 1st year I owned it, otherwise no issues.
My wife was pulling tubers, came into shore under throttle and shut engine off without allowing it idle 1st. The engine ?dieseled? or ?ran on? after shut down.
I got into the boat to pull the next set of tubers and the starter just clicked, popped the hatch and observed belt ?jumping? when starter engaged. Assume that the engine is liquid locked (I had heard of this happening but I was skeptical). Removed a spark plug, yes, there is water in the cylinder. I only had a 5/8 wrench on the boat and could not get all the plugs out, it took a couple hours to acquire a socket, by this time the motor would not turn at all.
Got towed back to the launch, when I got home I shot oil in the spark plug holes.
The next morning I attempted to turn the engine ? no luck. Put penetrating oil in the plug holes and poured transmission fluid down the carburetor and waiting 4 hours. Attempted to turn the engine again, no luck, was very concerned about breaking the bolt off in the crankshaft so I removed it and the crank pulley. I then bolted my ?universal puller bracket? onto the harmonic balancer (theory was that this would spread the stress over the three pulley bolts instead of just one or two). I finally got the engine to turn by hitting this bracket with a 2 pound hammer and a large punch. Once the engine moved I tried the starter (plugs are still out) and spun it for about 20 seconds to blow the water/oil out of the cylinders.
Put it back together ? runs great. Changed the oil and filter ? there was no sign of water in the engine oil, looks like it stayed in the cylinders.
Questions:
1) Is there anything other than the normal ?dieseling? prevention measures (timing, fuel, heat) that one can do to prevent this?
2) If not, who the@#$ engineered this setup?
3) Do I need to worry about permanent damage after this one incident?
