i just bought a 1984 ev150vro
in going through the motor, changing water pump running and making sure everything is ok, its overheating and the horn sounds. Heads are uncomfortable hot i shut it down before damage was done. Im not a professional but not new at this by any means.
I traced everything down water flow from pump is aok going to the powerhead through the block to thermostats out of the heads down into the mid section. Now here is my question: how does thewarmed water get passed overboard???? i have everything apart. powerhead off, midsection completely torn down everything apart. I was hoping to find a blockage but did not. The only thing I found was that the heated overboard water goes directly into the midsection then how does it go overboard? The motor did not have a horshoe zinc on the midsection and i noticed upon running the motor warmed water was passwing up and out of the two bolt holes for the zinc. that hole cavity between the gearcase and midsecion fills with heated water that cant get out. Im stuck on this one. if you guys have any ideas id appreciate it.

The midsection is supposed to partially fill with water and it should exit through the several drain holes at the top of the gearcase and through the exhaust relief holes at the top rear of the midsection.

Most of the water is supposed to leave with the exhaust and out at the propeller; if the inner exhaust seals are bad or missing, especially at the lower unit, you will have too much water in the midsection.

The telltale on the 1984 V6 crossflow motors got water at the exhaust cover.

Does it overheat at idle or when you are on plane or both? Are the stats new and how do the pressure relief valves look in the theromostat housings? Did you pull the head covers and look for debris in them? Sand, weeds, etc. If you see debris, pull the heads and check the powerhead water passages. Also check the water diverters in the head. If they are missing/deteriorated/or out of position, it will overheat.

Thank you as well sir. I appreciate you taking the time. It overheats at fast idle while running out of water. I pulled cyl hd covers off and both covers were thourghly salted up. Im going to pull the heads and check it out. Thanks again.
