I have a new old boat with a 60hp 1984 mercury outboard that hasn't been started in over a year. The boat was very neglected and I am trying to get it going again. I decided that I should take out the carbs and clean them. I have a Seloc repair manual for it (might be a mistake) and they make it seem pretty straight forward, and I am sure it is for you people more knowledgeable. First off this a 3 cylinder, and I thought it would have 3 carbs, but it only has 2 (is that right or am missing something) Second thing is it says to take off the throttle linkage which looks very accessable in the picture, but on the boat it seems buried behind some air intake cylinders. Third, there is no air filter in front of the carbs. (this can't possibly be could it) I would like to start learning how to do some basic things on this outboard but now feel like maybe I should take it to some pros. Is it my manual or should I just turn this over to a shop.

Thanks,
Scott

no air filters, no problem. most have no filters. not much dust on the water. the merc manual is much better than the seloc

You could just run some Sea Foam through it and see how it does.

If you take the carbs off ,be carefull of the little plastic coupler between the upper and lower carb. There is only two jets in each carb. They have different no.s stamped on them. Make sure you get them back in the right holes. They are like, .o96 and .074.............Don't quote me on that............Make sure you note how the floats go and put the parts in seperate containers marked carb 1 and 2.
Suspend the carbs in carb cleaner overnight and wash them down and blow them out with compressed air. Take out the plastic venturis. It isn't as scary as it sounds. I had a Clymer book too. Not so good.............Jerry

There are two carbs. Check the book for how many turns out on the adjustment screws.
