Don't drill into the Cav plate.

A fin on the Cav plate is only a bandaide for an underlying issue.......

Ayuh,... ALL V-hulls wander,...

Learn how to drive it, instead of adding that band-aid...

Less operator input usually cures the problem...

A standard twist drill used for drilling metal, yes the 18 will work if charged up and turning the right direction.

Re: drilling into the cavitation plate

ya do realize that if ya hit a uso (underwater solid object) that whale tail will likely break off a piece of your anti cavitation plate. i bet that wander fin would really not like uso's.
never seen one of them wander fins. interesting. however i'm with 78 crusader and Bond-o. learn how to drive. fwiw. my boat wanders too (19' v hull). i pointed my bow at a distant object. then started idling toward it. letting it wander. in the end, i came out about on course.. just went back and forth while underway.
i had me a whale tale on my 1st boat. i found a uso, broke my anti cavitation plate too.

as for the drill bit. agree with Don S. any ol sharp drill bit will do. cast alum. is very soft and you'll go right through it like a hot knife through butter...

Re: drilling into the cavitation plate

maybe practice makes perfect? docking is a skill to be learned. much has been written in various boat handling books, chapmans seamanship and boat handling comes to mind.
i don't see how yer wandering while docking. wandering occurs while underway at real slow speeds while trying to go in a straight line. while docking, your not underway, your going so slow that your in and out of gear (+ giving the helm, steering, input to line up with the dock)unless your docking in wind or current. even in them conditions, your still going so slow and such a short distance to being on the dock or still approaching the dock, wandering should not be an issue at that point. drifting maybe, but not wandering. imho.

a uso would hit my prop also
probably so and it'll break or bend too. point is imho, is them long fins on that wandering whaletail are just asking for something to put stress on your anti cavitation plate, if ya contact something with it. while cast alum. drills real easy, it's also very fragile to side loads, like cast alum. just breaks off.
as ya can tell, i'm one of them fellas that don't have appreciation for whale tales..

Re: drilling into the cavitation plate

You use a standard metal bit to drill the cast aluminum on the cavitation plate. Drill at a slower speed than you would in steel and use a little oil to help it cut. Take a minute after you have the holes drilled to debur the edges so the surface is smooth top and bottom. This helps stop crack propagation.

Re: wanderfin

I don't personally have any experience with that bolt on fin, but I do know that they add quite a bit of stress to the outdrive where it bolts to, and have seen drives cracked at that exact point from the stress.

Re: wanderfin

Hello,

I recently installed a set of smart tabs on our boat and have noticed that when docking the boat is much easier to handle(we dock up a shallow creek and have to have the motor trimmed way up) so now instead of having to steer with what seems like a thruster(full right or full left) the boat goes where I want it to. And that is just one of the many benifits of the tabs, you might want to research the smart tabs before you start drilling.

Calvi.
