How is the thermostat retained in the housing on the 3.0 GLP=C engine?

There is an oring that fits in the groove to hold the thermostat in.

The impeller is new and the motor temp stabilizes with a garden hose attached to the engine flushing hose or the stern drive.

I put it the water and it seemed to be doing OK with the temp at a steady 170.

Then, I out in gear and pulled away at idle speed. Immediately, the temp went up.

Could it be the thermostat?
