Re: Volvo Penta Raw Water Pump

This is what I am seeing for a potential "rebuild" kit, but some parts have to be cross referenced.
I'm working on the bearing final cross reference...almost have it from JSK bearings.

0.2233.001 LIP SEAL 16X28X7 DPSM (part 12 in diagram)
0.2173.471 O-RING 14.3X2.4 SS1586 NBR70 (part 10 in diagram)
0.3431.761 BALL BEARING D 15 6202-2RS1 (ST) (need TWO; part 11 in diagram) 15mm shaft diameter, ST for stainless bearing

The gasket and impeller are part of any standard impeller kit for this particular pump, along w/ glycerin for installation.

http://www.mesamarine.com/JP.html
they carry all three of these parts; however bearings are $28 each, but I have found them down to $7 on other sites

this is the skf website spec sheet for the bearing. However, I have also found same/similar bearing on their site called 6202-J (but it is not sealed)

Working on it part by part.....follow the pdf link listed in the post to the rosemarine website and you should be able to find your specific pump....there are a TON of them on that pdf.....just do a search for your VP part number and it should come up to the exact page you need....or post your actual VP pump part number here and I will search for you

Re: Volvo Penta Raw Water Pump

I ordered some parts today....only ran me $21 total, so we'll see how well this kit works:
Bearing (Stainless, sealed, $8 each, quantity 2):
DAYTON Radial Bearing, Shielded, Bore 15 mm - Radial Ball Bearings - 1ZGG5|1ZGG5 - Grainger Industrial Supply
Lip Seal ($4):
SKF Shaft Seal, Dia. 16mm, Width 7mm - Rotary Shaft Seals - 40J957|16X28X7 HMS5 RG - Grainger Industrial Supply
O-ring ($3):
GRAINGER APPROVED VENDOR O-Ring, Buna N, AS568A-113, Pk 10 - O-Rings - 5JJR7|5JJR7 - Grainger Industrial Supply

The oring called for in the drawing states: 14.3 x 2.4mm.
This is misleading. The inner diameter is 14.3mm, as it is closing over a recess cut into the 16mm shaft.
This means the following:
14.3mm equals 9/16" inside diameter.
2.4mm width equals 3/32".
19.1mm (which equals 14.3mm plus 2.4mm x2) equals 3/4" total outside diameter.
So I ordered the imperial dimensions because I could not find the metric dimensions needed in low quantities, and not at all at Grainger.

These parts meet/exceed temp spec's from everything I could find.
And if they don't fit, I'm only out like twenty bucks. (I get free shipping and a discount from Grainger.)

Re: Volvo Penta Raw Water Pump

Got all my parts in....
After some trial and error, I did manage to get everything completely disassembled got the bearings, seal, and oring replaced, and just put everything back together and got it all running. No leaks so far.

I took some pic's along the way, but not as many as I should have.

I will post a tutorial of what I did, but I will say this:
If you do not suspect the bearings as being bad, I would highly suggest simply replacing the lip seal underneath the impeller.
This is SO much easier to do than doing a whole bearing job and disassembly, and it's a $4 part for better than stock!

You just have to make sure you clean the shaft of corrosion when you replace the lip seal, and ensure that it did not disintegrate to the point where the metal ring around the lip seal scored the main shaft. If that happens, you have little choice but to replace the pump and or find a replacement shaft. I don't know if the shaft is available; I didn't need one.

But the parts that I listed from Grainger ARE valid parts for this model pump, and the bearings are stamped as the 6202 series stainless, sealed with rubber sides, and made in France. So any stainless, sealed bearing 35mmx15mm bore x11mm width will work on this shaft.

Re: Volvo Penta Raw Water Pump

Hey insttech1 any pics for the lip seal replacement? I think my bearings are good but if you say replacing the lip seal is easier then I wouldn't mind trying that first.

Thanks for your work with this!

Re: Volvo Penta Raw Water Pump

Yeah I'll get a pic for you.
The lip seal "should" be easy on its own.
(It's SUPER easy with the whole thing disassembled!)

You just have to make sure you get all the corrosion off the shaft when replacing the seal.
I'll post an instructional thing tonight.

Can you ask a moderator to make this a sticky post for a rebuild/instructions?
(and you're welcome!:))

Re: Volvo Penta Raw Water Pump

Cozilla,
Do you have your pump off?
Can you remove the impeller and take a detailed pic' of the shaft/lip seal beneath the impeller so we can get some kind of idea of what shape it is in?
Thanks!

Re: Volvo Penta Raw Water Pump

The pump may cost more, but the parts are infinitely cheaper.
Looking up your bearing part number 0.3431.753, I can readily find it in marine stores for as little as $15.

If you were to find the actual spec' dimensions of that bearing, you can probably get it from Grainger for $8 to $10.
And the lip seal is only around $4.

All you have to do is get the pump dis-assembled correctly, ensure the surfaces are clean and not damaged, replace the bearing and lip seal, and replace the impeller as normal. Of course you must be careful when re-seating the bearing if you do not have a press, and take your time. Or even if you took it to a shop to have the bearing removed/installed, it's still a fraction of a new pump!

$20 for a new pump.....or less! (And that's with OEM-exceeded grade parts!!!!)
Sounds good to me!:)
