My SX sterndrive failed after running low on oil. I know. Should have known better.
Have a 1998 VP cobra SX-C 3868584, 1.79 R. I assume 21-26 gears.
VP V6 4.3l GL PBYC.
I am a DIY guy, getting ready to pull it. Am thinking maybe the upper gear case can be replaced to fix this problem. I understand the SX=A are newer than the C models and are not backwards compatible. My Seloc manual shows that a M model is applicable. Can I use the M model upper gearcase? I need advice/ guidance please. Need a list reputable companies that offer rebuilt and new gear cases too. I think the lower gearcase is good, and will find out soon...................

Throw the seloc manual away and get a factory manual

You have to rebuild the whole drive. Grenaded parts from the top make it to the bottom

It would be cheaper and faster to find a different drive

Thank you. Any idea where to buy quality rebuilt drive? Can an M replace a C with the same gear Ratio?

Check Ebay. They seem to carry a good selection of used and rebuilt units. Sell yours for parts to recoup some of the cost.

I’ve had good luck with boatwrench.com for rebuilt drives. They are easier to reach than freshwater.
