I have owned this boat since 2002 , its a 98 Four Winns 170, it has a 3.0 gs in it, every year it has been winerized , when i got it out this year, i decided to put new plugs and dist cap and rotor , on it, it has the EST ignition , we replaced it , went to the lake, has a rough idle when barely kicked into gear, so i changed the plugs again , put new volvo wires on it, new coil , took it out and it still does the same thing, its still hard to start and ideles rough at a low rpm , whn throttle is applied everything clears up and runs great at high rpms , so we came back and rebuilt the carb, new everything , which was a simple job which i have done several times before on race cars ,, i tried to run it again , no difference, i changed both fuel filters, and checked the hoses and filter to the tank , the diaphram in the pump is good and the pumpis pumping fine, we did find this problem , at idle, you can pull # 1-3 plug wires off the cap and the boat almost dies , you pull # 4 off a its like it is not hitting on that cylinder at idle , you can run it up to 1500 rpms and pull it off and it cuts out and is working like the rest of the cylinders , the only thing i havent changed and bought new is the pickup coil in the distributor , module in the distributor , oil looks brand new, boat runs great at 1/4 throttle and up , just not at idle and through now wake zones, and sometines takes a minute tos start , any help is appreciated, its a simple engine , it can't be too much , just some small thing i have overlooked

Have you looked in the Mercruiser maintenance manual for a trouble shooting guide?

Have you run a compression test, or at least stuck your finger over the spark plug hole #4 to see if it's blown off (not literally :p) when the engine is cranked over.

How about putting your timing light on the wire for plug #4 to see if it's firing all the time.

we are checking compression tomorrow ,when you pull the wire off the cap it does arc from the wire to the cap , i have heard a few oher threads talking about cracked manifolds , could that be a possibility

Re: Volvo Penta 3.0 Problems

Hi 68LS1CAMARO...I am buying a boat with the same motor and it is acting the same exact way. I left a deposit and will buy it if the owner gets it running right at idle. Just wondering if you found the fix for your engine? I noticed during the test drive that the hose clamp around the exhaust manifold coupling (rubber boot between exhaust manifold and exhaust ''pipe") was loose and spitting water. We tightened it and no water, but still very rough idle. Engine shakes from side to side. Great at mid to full power. Maybe rough idle is related to water in exhaust?? Could be blocking #4 cylinder??
