Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

ok, i just got my receipt and the ujoints came from sierra, p.n. 18-2104 $33.40 each. and greaseable. bellows 18-2744 $42.64. also i removed the piece that is shimmed that is on the gear box that hooks to the helmet. it looks like it was in the way so i took it off. glad i did. i found two of my three shims where corroded and my o-ring was pinched from a previous repair i suppose. i just ordered parts from my local volvo dealer. o-ring and one of each .5mm .10mm .25 mm shims. my gearbox has one of each so thats what its getting when i put it back together. i made my own gasket for the water pickup fitting. you can't get them from volvo right now so gasket maker and a razor knife works well. that was also leaking so its getting fixed too.

Tommy, I'm not sure about the water pickup fitting gasket. It has an oring built into it that sits down in the intermediate and the pivot tube. I wouldn't use a flat gasket as I'm sure it will leak.

here's the OEM gasket, #29

You're also kind of hijacking mgrudz's thread with your own project. I'd suggest starting your own thread.

Agreed about the thread, I'm still getting use to the rules and respect. Thanks mellow. I hope that something I shared was of value. I figured he might run into some of the same issues as me since it looks like we are at about the same place with our drives. Anyway thanks.

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

Thank you all for the information. I have a manual but there is no substitute for experience. I have all the parts and was starting to put it back together and I noticed a split in the shift cable. http://www.iboats.com/33C-Supreme-C...1911000--**********.428705066--view_id.237264
Now my question is: Is there an outer protective jacket, tube, or hose that is suppose to go over this cable from the transom to the outdrive? I have done some research and some volvo i/o's have them. I just have the red cable running from the transom into the outdrive. The cable says it has water resistant seals at the end and the cable in the shift area is open to the water so what is the right way?

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

Ya, that sounds right. Cable goes through a hose in the bilge out the transom shield and into the outdrive.:)

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

Mine goes inside a 2 foot section of hose. The hose is on the inside if the boat. Threaded into the transom housing. Then the cable is bare as it exits the boat. The two feet of hose on the inside is to not allow water up over the top of the hose. It's much higher than the water level. But no, no hose outside the boat mine is exposed to water. I can post pics of my 275 if you need?

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

Anytime, I'm waiting on my shims and water fitting with gaskets and some seals. That rearmost u-joint can be annoying to change huh? Ha ha. But I hope to enjoy wakeboarding until late sept here in Mississippi

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

I had my local tranny shop change the ujoints. i just had them put a $1700 tranny in my ram so they did it gratis. i am sometimes a bull in a china shop so better off the peeps who make a living at it do it. I am waiting to get the parasail up. i will have to post pics of that when it happens. it will be a load off my mind on the water though when this new to me boat is in the water and i can trust her.

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

sounds like you've almost got it back together.:)

Nice looking boat BTW, hope everything works out. These old boats need a lot of maintenance. Don't let it discourage you.

Let us know how the water trial goes.

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

while putting the cable in noticed the bushing under the water connection is sloppy. More parts will be on the way. I actually enjoy the older boats and the bit of tinkering and learning that goes with it. I could get it right now or break down middle season when I want to play. I will take the patient approach. :)

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

capt mello could you help out with a parts list of everything i should replace when I pull the rest of the drive. I havent looked in the manual yet but I believe I have to pull the fork, then the lower from the mid and then remove the water tube or steering knuckle. I see the upper bushing, the 2 sealing rings on either side of the needle bearing as well as the needle bearing and the oring on the bottom of the tube. I also will get new bushings for the sides of the suspension fork. Did I miss anything on the mid? How about anything between the mid and lower? Anything else that is a common wear part? As long as I am in this deep I will do everything that needs it or common things that should be replaced.

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Plowing

Funny, I did that exact job on my outdrive over the winter. It sounds like you've got all the parts figured out.

When you seperate the lower, there are 3 orings total.
two orings when you reinstall the upper.
Two bushings where the pivot pins go through the fork like you mentioned.
upper pivot bushing supporting the pivot tube.
needle bearing set and two seals.

I would hope you order any parts you can through Iboats. If they are a dealer only item, I've had good luck with this site.http://marinepartsexpress.com/

I suppose if your retaining pawl needs work, that would be the time. Mine seemed fine.

When your ready to start, start a new thread and I'll post some additional backyard mechanic suggestions and pics.;)

Wow we are at the same spot still. Mine is completely off as of 5 min ago. I found shade tree RTV on my main pivot pipe at the bottom. Sucking air:(
