Hi guys,

What's the expected oil to be used in the outdrive of a VP 3.0 SX drive?

Would it matter using something other than Volvo's own oil?

Also would anyone happen to have the rubber o-ring part numbers for replacement on the dipstick and the drain plug? OR make use of a universal O-Ring should do the trick?

Thanks

You need three O-rings. One for dipstick, one for overfill and one for drai. Part numbers should be 3855081 and 3852045. Thats what I have on the packages.

From the VP Operator Manual:

The drive unit is filled at the factory with Volvo Penta DuraPlus
GL5 Synthetic gearcase lubricant. This lubricant must be used
when adding lubricant or refilling the drive unit.

The "Must" part is that it must be a Synthetic GL5 Oil. Using anything Else could lead to Failure of the Drive Train. Something to do with Oil-Bearing Material, compatibility

The sierra brand gl5 rated gear oil is used in almost every boat repair shop across the country for Volvo drives

Until about 2010 Volvo used to recommend Mobilube 1 SHC 75W-90 until they realised that they were missing out on selling their overpriced own labelled stuff.
I also use it in gear boxes and transfer cases in my Toyota Landcruiser and Rav4, so buy it in 20ltr drums.

Never heard of that. In 2002 Volvo was recommending their Brand of Lubricants.

From VPA 7743008 07-2003

Sterndrive Oil Capacity
Draining and Filling Sterndrive When a complete change of lubricant is required in the sterndrive,
proceed as follows:
1. Remove both propellers See “Propeller Removal and Installation
- DP-S Models” on page 263.
2. Place sterndrive in the run (full down) position. Place a
4 quart drain pan under lower gear case skeg to catch oil.
3. Remove the oil drain plug (inside lower gear case) and the oil level
dipstick (top of sterndrive). Removing dipstick vents drive to
improve oil draining. Allow oil to drain completely.

Thanks all,

So effectively I'm looking at any oil that has the following:

75w-90
Fully synthetic
GL-5

I've looked for the amsoil but a little difficult and expensive to get hold of here in the UK, I'll probably grab the Mobilube 1 SHC 75W-90.

Can anyone recall the amount required to fill the drive?

Thanks for the O-ring part numbers massive help!

From the manual
Sterndrive Oil Capacity 71 oz. (2100 cc)
BTW I generally buy my Mobilube 1 SHC Fully Synthetic SAE 75W-90 from Ebay and usually comes from Germany (make sure it is SHC as the others are LSD axles.

Thanks - that's 2.1 litres just over the two mark, how annoying! :D

Three litres of Mobilube 1 SHC Fully Synthetic SAE 75W-90 from ebay it is, thanks again.

Thanks cptbill.

Another to add to the list.

I'd assume anything that is SHC GL-5 75w-90 is acceptable.

Agree to change this every year on the drive unit no matter the hours, its not worth the risk.

Thanks
