volvo penta 170

Hello to all
I have a ? about a bayliner liberty that i bought needs some work but is in very good shape.
it has a volvo penta 170 with a 280 out drive my ? is how do i know what the motor is for sure a 170 a 170 b or a 170 c any help i would apperciate

If you can't find a tag on the engine that says, then the first place to start is what year the boat is. and is the engine a 4 or 6 cylinder?

the boat is a 1983 liberty bayliner with a volvo 170 6 cyclnder cant find any other numbers on her

Being an 83, it just about has to be an AQ170C, The last year the 170 was manufactured by Volvo Penta was 78, so that must have been an engine package used by VP for many years, or it was sitting around the Bayliner factory for a long time before being installed, or an engine installed by a previous owner. If the latter, it's hard to say what model it would be.
