vin# on 1150 mercury

i am looking to buy a 1150 mercury motor and the owner doesnt know the year model and i cant find a serial number. never owned a mercury. i was told you use to tell by the color on the striping of the motor cover. this motor has the blue stripes. owner thinks it is a mid eighties but it looks older to me.<br />thanks

From my experience, if the motor has no serial number it is because it is a replaced power head.

That engine, 115 six cylinder in-line was produced from the early 70's to the late 80's. The motor cowlings can be interchanged, so the band color is not a good judge of the year. You might find the serial # on the block itself. If not the type of ignition system could help with the approximate year range.
