Hi guys,

Recently took the boat out and noticed a fair amount of water in the bilge.... yes...saltwater....

Ok I found Dons nice write up on how to easily change the UJ bellows via upper unit. Will be doing that shortly since i think i have a leak

but another question I have is the following....

Assuming I did have a leak.... what else should I do? where could saltwater have gone into and ruined? transmission? engine oil? i did notice more vibrations than usual. I am assuming I may have gotten saltwater in somewhere it should not have been.

Get the OEM bellows, not aftermarket. Those bellows are thin to begin with. mo reason to use ones with cheaper material along with the thin material. Just above your post, click on the Volvo part icon and chose OEM pars.

Once you get the upper gear box off, you are probably going to need ujoints as well as other things. Get it apart and post some pictures.

thanks for the reply....

Don...

the main question I have is whether or not the bellows can lead to water in the bilge or should I look elsewhere? I am going to change this out ASAP, but really need to know if I could get 1-3 inches of water from that tiny hole? I know there may be other holes I cannot see..... but in your opinion, should I be looking elsewhere or could this be the biggest culprit?

and further.... if salt water has intruded the bellows, where else has it gone?

Re: vibrations on 290A

It's possible for water to get in the bilge because of a leaky bellows. The water has to go through the bearing in the flywheel housing. You would probably have the nose of the starter and the bendix all rusty as well. At which point you would have to pull your 570 engine out to replace the bearings (assuming you have the double bearing setup) and seals in the flywheel housing on the primary drive shaft.
If you have the single bearing, you may be able to pull just the shaft if it's not rusted solid in the flex plate.
Usually when that happens you get starter problems, and noisy bearings as an indication of problems.

Wow Don,

you could not be more correct, (as if I expected otherwise)

Starter has been a little difficult lately, no noise yet from bearings, but as I said felt a little more "shaky" than normal.

one other question...... is this the correct one for a 290A DP.

My problem is that i see some that are cone shaped and some that are not....plus i dont see 290A listed

Re: vibrations on 290A

ok great thanks....good resource but there's a small problem.

Volvo Penta Engine Part Catalog - Volvo Penta

then click on the drives & transmissions tab

then click on the 120-290

and please tell me why there are 4 choices for 290A option.....

I have no idea where to click to find the correct parts for my drive.

I have a duo prop so really not sure what my drive is exactly ..... is it a 290A-DP-A ? or a 290A-DP or a 290-DPA

how is anyone really supposed to make sense of this?

Same drive, different engines.

What does it say on the tag just in front of the upper gear housing cap?

Re: vibrations on 290A

It's not a 290A, it's either a DP-A or DP-B series. You can tell by the cap on the upper gear housing.

Get a wire brush and clean the paint off the tag.

Re: vibrations on 290A

It's either a DP-A or B. That is due to the shape of the top cap and back cover of the drive, plus the bracket around the trim cylinders.

The differences in all the different A and B versions are mostly internal drive parts.
Here is a drive chart to look at, it should help you see what changes. It's

Re: vibrations on 290A

ok... well ... you learn something new every day.

my money is on DP-A. Simply because I think the PO just got mixed up on the 290 issue since the manuals are the same. it would be hard to imagine a DP-B would be confused with anything......

So I am guessing the DP-A were made circa 1989-90?
