vhf radio static..

i have a 88 Galaxy cuddy cabin. 262v6 motor. when i turn the am/fm radio on, the hand held vhf gets full of static. the stereo is wired to a separate battery not connected to the starter/boat battery. noise filter of some sort?

The first thing to try is turning up the squelch on the VHF a little.

If squelch don't cure it,you could add a ferrite to the wire as close to the unit as possible. Radio shack should have them.
