o.k so for those you that read my last post, heres the new problem. i was having trouble getting my 1989 115 mercury tilt/trim motor working it would not spin. both the seleniods were clicking but the motor, nothing. after hours of hitting it with a hammer, it started to spin a bit. so i removed the small screw in front of the trim motor and that must have let some air out and motor now spins. but only down... the new problem, i tried to purg it hoping once i got all the air out it would work up and down. but i have had no luck.

i raise the motor up by hand using the plastic screw on the right side of the t/t, than use the tilt motor to lower it. i did this a good 30 times and still wasnt getting anywhere. most of the other post i resd on this topic it was the other way round.

can the motor be purged this way or am i doing somthing wrong? i dont know what else to try can anyone help? thanks.

The problem with the motor not running has nothing to do with air, you have a electrical problem. Hammering on it won't fix it the motor has a bad interior connection, stuck brush, broken spring and you can hammer till next June and it still won't work properly. The Mercury manual has a very good electical test for the tilt system, find one and read it quit wasting your time hammering.

solnoid clicking does mean the power is going thru.... you can test this by jumpering the big wireson each side of the solnoid. just dont try a big hammer as laddies stated lol

Right on, hammer is best used on your head, or as a jumper across the solenoids!

I've seen lots of these later-style Merc solenoids with bad contacts, they do just like you said, 'click' 'click' but nothin' happens.

The contacts inside the solenoid get burnt up from countless "on-off" cycles until they will no longer conduct electricity thru them.

Trim solenoids and starter solenoids both have a bad habit of doing this. If the trim motor runs after doing the "jumper" test, replace the solenoid. If the motor don't run even "juiced up" directly, it's got issues and requires disassembly, with wrenches not hammer!! ;)

My motor was doing the same thing, the hammer did not fix it:rolleyes: It turned out to be a corroded power wire, it provided enough power to click the solnoid but not to turn the motor.
