Prices on pre alpha MC-1 drives in my area seem very reasonable $150-300 for a good drive. SE 116 (alpha 1 gen II) is what you are supposed to use with the OMC cobra kit, but I wonder why they do not want you using the SE 106 drive (alpha 1 gen I)?

Anyways, has anyone done this with a pre alpha?

The bellhousing designed to fit the Cobra gimbal ring will not work with the pre Gen II outdrives.

I installed the 116 SEI kit last year. Its all bolt on except for the shift controls. You have to change out the forward and reverse.

Also, more than likely, the cavitation plate sits higher up than a Cobra. This has caused some slippage from the prop on my boat.

In the end, you got to move away from the OMC cobra. This SEI works real nice and is not difficult to install if you are mechanically inclined. SEI stands behind the outdives as well.

Re: Using Pre Alpha with SEI to Cobra retrofit kit?

I have a 1996 four winns volvo penta sx cobra with what has been diasgnosed as an upper outdrive unit failure. The local marina has told me they can possibly rebuild it. Everything I have found on these is extremely expensive new or used so I would imagine the re-build would also hold true to that. I guess I have 2 questions. In a rebuild- can it be geared differently for more speed and power? "Could" it be more money smart to switch to a merc? Is that something marina do regularly?

Ayuh,... That's 3 questions....

Yes, it can be regeared, but Speed, 'n Power are opposite directions in this case...

If ya got the Volvo drive,.. Naw, stick with the expensive beast...
Goin' to Merc will take a long time to recoup, if ever...

I'm sure Some marinas do it everyday, but I'm also pretty sure those marinas are few, 'n far apart...

Btw, Welcome Aboard,... Ya oughta start a thread of yer Own, insteada hi-jackin' this old 1...
