Using old mercruiser 140 engine in boat that had 3.0L with alpha one gen 2

Hello, a local marina closed last summer and was selling things very cheap. I picked up a 2003 Bayliner with a 3.0L mercruiser alpha 1 gen 2 drive. The engine had not been winterized properly and had a cracked block. They sold with it an older mercruiser 140. The whole package with trailer was $500. They said their plan had been to put the 140 in the boat to replace the 3.0L

Will I need to completely dress the 140 with all the components of the 3.0L. Ignition system, exhaust manifold and riser, carb, flywheel and coupler? Can I leave the output end of engine the same (with old flywheel and coupler, but just use new bell housing)? I would still need to swap exhaust manifold too which is fine. I've just been told I won't be able to attach the flywheel and coupler from the newer 3.0L to the older 140.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,...... Yes, you'll need to swap some of the parts, if yer gonna put in that boat,....

Great thank you, I'm willing to swap everything, just was told on a few other places the new flywheel and coupler will not bolt onto the old engine. Different rear main seal 1 vs 2 pieces. I just didn't understand how that would effect how the flywheel attaches. I'll rip them both apart and check I guess! Thank you

Bolt pattern on the crankshaft is different so the old flywheel won’t bolt to the new engine. One of the aftermarket companies makes parts to fit it together.

Thanks Matt167. And I'm assuming that is necessary to do. I can't swap everything except the old flywheel and coupler? Drive won't fit in properly?

You will use the flywheel from the older motor and a coupler designed to fit the old motor to the newer outdrive. With all the right parts it’ll fit and work

I'll have to track that coupler down, I wonder what the proper wording would be to search for it

You will use the flywheel from the older motor and a coupler designed to fit the old motor to the newer outdrive. With all the right parts it’ll fit and work
Ayuh,.... I believe, that the older flywheel, should be drilled, 'n tapped for mounting a clutch,.....
So, the newer coupler should bolt onto the older flywheel,....

The older coupler bolts to the crankshaft,.....
The newer coupler bolts to the flywheel,....

True enough. Ive got a line on a direct drop in 3.0L, I don't mind spending a bit of money going to sell this boat anyway. Will sell the 140 separately then. Might be easier than trying to find parts to make the conversion
