Going to use my new Lund in the salt water for the first time this weekend.

Any tips on keeping the rust away, protecting the engine, etc?

It won't hurt the aluminum hull...just rinse with fresh water later. I spray my tilt/trim unit, rams, pump, motor with white lithium grease to keep the salt water off it...sets up sorta simi-hard, stays on there very well, works like a charm. Might spray your trailer hubs, lug-nuts, springs, shackles, any bare metal, etc. with that same grease...Remember to flush your motor good with fresh water afterwards. Good Luck!:)

As Robert suggested:

salt water does not harm outboards. Flushing may be helpful but it is not crucial.

It does not harm the hulls of boats. Salt water, and worse, salt air, will, over time, affect electrical connections and fittings that are not marine fittings, as well as non-marine or low quality gear like tools, tackle, etc. White lithium grease is a good solution, as stated, as is rinsing with fresh water.

It's tough on trailers. Try to launch/retrieve without getting the axle in the water. Unplug your lights. Don't use a steel trailer more than a couple times.

Someone here said that additives such as salt-away flush your wallet better than the motor.

Home Cookin' is spot on about the trailer...flush it, then flush it again...especially axles and rotors.

DON'T DO IT! IT'LL DISSOLVE AWAY LIKE AN ALKA-SELTZER TABLET!

Nah, not really. The other guys are right, flush and rinse and you'll be fine.:D

I'd love to use my Tracker 18 bass boat with 50 HP for bay fishing. Tracker Marine said boat and accessories would be OK but trailer is not galvanized and said it would hurt it. I like your idea of spraying white grease all over trailer and wheel parts. Then spraying and cleaning it well. I might give it a shot....

A lot of fresh water folks tend to get a little over excited when it comes to our beloved saltwater. Not sure my boat would know what to do if it got in fresh water, lol. Proper maintanence and you'll be just peachy.
