I bought a 2017 yamaha 90 four stroke a couple of months ago. The dealership where I bought it wasn't allowed to have customers instore at the time because of Covid but the sales person sent me a couple of videos of the motor starting up and running. I noticed that the mechanic was using the hose flush adaptor for cooling and not muffs on the lower leg. Did this ruin the water impellor do you think or is this acceptable practice. I'll likely pull the lower leg and check the impellor anyway but just wondering what people think of this practice?

Yeah, thats what I thought. They probably only ran it for a short while, but I better check that impellor. Strange though, as they have a good reputation around here....

I have read as long as there is very good water pressure there will be some water getting to the pump lubricating it.
if you are really worried about it inspect the pump yourself

I have friends with twin Yammi 150 and 200s.

Both run (idle) their motors on flush port for short periods of time for test purposes.

Did they actually have the motor running while the hose was connected to flush port? I have a Yamaha F150, both my mechanic and manual say to not run the motor while only using the flush port.

From what I can see in the video, thats what they did. I don't know how long it ran.

Water pump for sure. Not worth the risk.I once had a seller demo a Grady with 150 for me and did the same improper method with the motor.I stopped him and turned off the key immediately.Explained that it is not the correct method.Put muffs on it and ran it and it overheated on muffs.I asked him if he had run the engine using his method before and he hesitated and answered no.........I passed on that purchase. He was full of crap and had already damaged his impeller.Charlie

Yeah I'll have a look before I use it. You would think a mechanic would know better.

have any of you looked at the size of the tubing that the hose screws onto to put water into the motor?
not much water can get thru there for cooling.
it is fine to use it, but if you want to run the motor, also use muffs to add water and lube the pump

If flushing through the flushing port with motor Off, assume the water hose must have a high pressure outlet for the thermo to open up, if not the cylinder head area won't be conveniently flushed, right ?

It will work for idle speed only without hurting the water pump. It does get a small amount of water to the pump, dont rev it up, only idle

so you think the hose water pressure has something to do with the stat opening some how?
