I have a 1988 Bayliner 2155 with 5.7 and omc outdrive, can I use the outdrive up and down switch for triming the boat?
Or will that harm any of the gears in the outdrive?

it will do no harm as long as your trim limit switch is still working. Not many 1980's Cobra trim limit switches still work. But the range from full down to trim limit is for exactly what you describe, trimming the boat angle whilst underway. After that, the drive continues up in the "trailering" range and should not be tilted that far when the engine is running.
