Unable to engage Yachtwin 3432C

Hello! <br /><br />I bought a 12 foot Jon boat with an old motor, and can't figure out how to get it in gear. It will start and run, but I don't get any thrust. Is there a lever I'm overlooking, or something special I need to do? One guy at the boat ramp mentioned moving the throttle lever to a special position and back, but this doesn't seem to work. <br /><br />I tried searching the forum to see if this question has been asked before, but didn't see it. What I did see is that this model is evidently a 1964. <br /><br />Does anyone have any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum!<br /><br />You need to post the model number for your motor. Someone here on the forum probably has one just like it. Or at least prior experience.<br /><br /><br />Good luck!

Ok....I see I nissed your model number in your post. Its a 1964 3 hp. Evinrude.<br /><br />This size motor has no forward and reverse lever. You back up by turning the motor around. Is that what your asking about.<br /><br />If your prop is not turning. Check for sheard pin.<br /><br />Good luck!

Thanks Goodolboy! <br /><br />One thing I realized after I posted is that I assumed that since someone else's model 3432C was built in 1964, mine was too. It dawned on me afterward that there could well be many years the same model was produced. In case it makes a difference, the serial # is: B105627.<br /><br />I'm able to spin the prop freely when the motor isn't running, so the prop pin being sheared makes sense. I understood about turning the motor all the way around for reverse, but wasn't sure if the motor was always in gear or or if it had a neutral/forward combo. Assuming the serial # doesn't change the year and therefore the answer, can you offer any hints on pulling the prop pin? There is what looks like a rubber cone over where the prop pin should be. I don't want to damage the cone when pulling it off.

Take the big nut off the end of the prop shaft. The nut should have a cotter pin thru it remove it first. Pull prop off.<br /><br />If it has splines on the shaft, Then it dosent have a shear pin. But if its just a bare shaft then look close for hole with pin stuck in it.<br /><br />If the cone your talking about looks kinda like an airplane prop nose, Bullet shaped then the big nut for removeing prop is behind it.<br /><br />Good luck!

Thanks again! You were right on about the bullet shaped cone. I had been afraid to do anything with it because I wasn't sure if/how it was supposed to come off. Based on your description I took two screwdrivers and gently walked it off. I'll post back what I find when I have the time to go further. I'm going to try to get a few hours on the lake this Sunday with my electric trolling motor. I'm pretty confident that the shear pin will solve the issue though!

You must have a sheared prop pin. When you get a new pin, get a couple extra and tape them to your tiller handle so you will have them for the future. If you have spare pins, you will probably never need them! I tuned a motor up similar to yours. Take a look at my 3 HP tune up project at http://outboard-boat-motor-repair.com

I pulled the prop off and both of you were right on it being the shear pin. $2 later at my local marine store (package of 2 plus a cotter key) and I'm good to go now! <br /><br />Thanks to both of you for all of your help!
