Is there a cheaper parts store alternative for the 865493A01. I have searched the fourm and did not come up with an alternative to the newer U joints with the external clips. $180 for a set of U joints is a bit expensive

Is the $89.09 for one or a set? $89 for the set is not bad but $89 each is a little excessive.

I can?t imagine it being something exotic that only merc's use, I bet it is just a common automotive u joint. I can?t decide for sure if it needs them or not. I get some buzzing vibration during high trim and hard turning but no "slapping" when I turn it all the way either way at idle. Might just be a gimbal bearing I plan on doing a transom service kit before lake season and I will inspect them while the drive is off

Pull the drive and check them... Your noise could also be the gimbal bearing, or even that the engine is out of alignment.

I think I found a set that will work. I wont know for sure until I pull the drive and mic the old set. I read that someone used a napa PUJ 344 but he could not get the clips to seat because the cross was a little long, they spec at 2.940. The Moog Chassis 344's are 2.935 hopfully since they are a little shorter they will work and the price is right at $15.97 each

Yes and No but mostly no. If the U joints do fit you have an issue with the grease fitting being between two of the joints. The Merc fittings pivot a lot and will come into contact with the fitting. If they did fit and if you removed the grease fitting and plugged the opening, then maybe, but just maybe. The maybe depends on what it was plugged with.
