U-joint bellows ring

[1979 Quartermasters]

Hey guys. Hope everyone is having a good holiday season, so far.
Took the bell housing off, changed all the bellows, water hose and drive oil line.
Cannot get that ring on the u-joint bellows in. Is bellows adhesive required at that location. I made a tool to drive it in, but i suspect i will just bend the ring.

Any tips or pointers would be welcome.

I hear using merc power tune or similar carb cleaner as a lubricant and it pushes in by hand… i dont think glue goes on that end .

The stuff makes rubber slicker than snot, the ring will push in with yer fingers,.....

Yes, power tune works great. I've bent the ring in the past, now it's easy as pie! I also use it to get stubborn hoses off/on and things like that. Even getting old impellers out of the housings on the bigger pumps helps a lot.

Tried the that but the ring seems to get hung up on the leading edge of the bellow. Got a couple hours of trying to get past it to no avail.

I used a quart paint can filled with old drive oil to set the ring. It fits into the bore like a piston in a cylinder. I held a 2x6 block of wood on the end of the can and gave it a couple of good licks with a hammer. Be aware I have only done this once but it worked well for me..

I found when I did them that it went really easy after I got the rubber ridge and groove perfectly lined up and seated down into the bellhousing groove.

Can't remember the foot pounds of the pins but clean them up well and add a very small dab of red Loctite to the threads. to much and they won't come out again. Just a tiny drop.

110 lb ft is in the factory manual

Be sure the groove in the bell housing is nice and clean so the rib on the bellows can fully seat.

Thanks again for all your help. Got the ring in, and the exhaust bellows was a bit difficult. All done that part, now off to hook the cable up and adjust.
