Two grease zerks on trailer hub

Repainting the trailer for the 1998 Sylvan 17’ Blue Fish we bought last fall. Cleaning up the hubs and see a second grease zerk behind the plate with the bolts in it. Both hubs are like this. It would be about impossible to get to with the tire on. Trailer is a Yacht Club. Can’t say I ever saw this before, but this is the first boat I’ve owned. Is this something that was done on boat trailers?

That is standard on some trailers. Maybe the PO put the bearing buddies on 'cause he couldn't see the hub-mounted zerks or they were inconvenient.
