That same "that thing got a hemi in it?" Hemi.

I towed my boat the half mile to the car wash behind a '12 Explorer v-6. (I was there, and I had my lunch hour to kill. Don't be hatin'). Even in high range it moved the boat uphill just fine. Downhill was an adventure, especially in the gravel parking lot. 'Bout a 30mph limit on that rig.

There's a big difference between a full-frame 2007 Durango and a unibody 2012 Explorer, and it has nothing to do with the number of cylinders the engine has. Gen 1 and Gen 2 Durangos have earned a reputation of being crappy "cars", but good tow vehicles and it's all due to that very truck-like full frame under them. They are heavy, old-fashioned, unrefined, and rugged. The 2012 Explorer is much more refined and car-like, and not nearly as well-suited to towing heavy. Same with the Gen 3 Durango.

Okay, so you like the Durango. It still doesn't have the towing capacity of a full sized truck, which is what the OP needs.

Why not buy a nice family hauler and a cheap 3/4-1 ton truck to move the boat? I've seen a few nice early 90's chevy 2500 4wd for 1500.00 around here. I'm working on a deal for a 86 3500 chevy dually 350,4spd,4wd for 1200.00. Just an idea.
