Re: Truck question.

BTW I disagree with needing a diesel for your purposes... The gas motor will be less impressive but you are towing very few miles.... You just don't NEED the diesel enough to justify the added cost.

Isn't that the truth. Very "few" people truly need a diesel. You can add about $8K to the price of a new truck and fuel costs more too......

After rereading, I see you dont pull far at all. For some reason I thought you pulled long distances, I may have saw something in your blog. I dont think I would go diesel. A half ton would do you fine for those distances.

The cool thing about living in Raleigh is pick almost anywhere on the NC coast and its about 150 miles each way. Last year we did trailer up to Sandy Point in Annapolis, MD to do a long weekend on the bay and we plan on doing one of those big trips once a year. I would say in season we go to the lake every other week, the coast every 6 weeks and a big trip once a summer. This summer we would like to put in at Portsmouth, VA and boat up to DC or Annapolis.

Just remember. The Toyota is a real thirsty truck. Loaded or empty it doesn't matter.
You might want to look at the Chevy 6.0

Yeah I have heard that about them. There is a Chevy dealer about 5 miles from my house. I swung by there tonight. I looked at a 2014 Silverado 4X4 LT1. It was a nice truck and the GM rebates are tempting. Not to mention it was rated at 11,500 (it had the max tow). We will see. Surprisingly its the wife that is pushing for the new truck "so we can get back on the coast as soon as possible". What a great woman I have.

Just curious what you're basing that off of as I get better mileage with my Tundra than friends with comparable year GMC/Chevy's. Dodge is notorious for bad mileage - I've driven a couple as loaners and they are worse than my Tundra.

Pulling a load, my Tundra does better than a '11 Chevy Avalanche 5.3L with active fuel management and tow package. Pulling same load, my '05 Four Winns, the Tundra can pull the same trip in OD, the Av hunts and had to be locked out into 4th to keep a constant speed. Gas mileage towing, my Tundra smoked the Av.

I think they have always been known for poor fuel economy compared to the others. It looks like the 14 is upped to 16/20 but they still lack technology such as cylinder deactivation. With that said its hard to compare this truck to that truck. Are the rear end ratios the same? Was the load the same? Was the driver the same? Too many things to take in to consideration. I know the 14 tundra offers a 4:3 ratio where as the highest GM goes is 3:73 (I think)

Where in the world are you getting your information from? The Dodge 1/2 ton has had MDS since 2006.

If you do get a GM truck, the first thing you want to do is to get a device that turns the cylinder deactivation off.

I hardly even notice it on my Ram. Most of the time it is only on the freeway and I wouldn't be able to tell if I didn't see the light come on.

Re: Truck question.

The issue with the 5.3 is increased wear on the non-firing cylinders with AFM. If I am not mistaken, there is a TSB on it. I believe that Bruce even posted it in the past.

I never posted it in the past but if you go on any of the full sized chevy forums you will hear about the 1 qt per 1000 mile oil consumption that GM says is normal. It's easy to disable and the fuel economy benefits to running in 4cyl mode is very debatable.

Re: Truck question.

I thought it was you that mentioned the 5.3 AFM issue about a year ago. my mistake

Ford and BMW used to claim 1 qt in 800 miles was within "tolerance". not sure if they still do. Then again, as hard as I drive vehicles, a bit of oil consumption is normal for me.

Re: Truck question.

I have a 5.3 in my 99 truck. I may have to add 1 qt in the 7000 mile oil change interval. Apparently, these AFM vehicles are not doing as well. Not all have the problem. May depend on how well the rings get seated.

Re: Truck question.

Looks like Toyota is the worst in TCO now - although not by much since the range is only .62 - .70.

Depends on how you use it also... The toyota sucks fuel like no other, but also has lower repair costs than some others... If you don't put on a lot of miles, the fuel cost might be a non-issue, which then moves the TCO towards the toyota. (or at least evens the field some)

So far at 100K miles on my Dodge the only repair I've had is a pair of $100 transmission lines. Most new trucks don't have many repairs these days. At 100K its still a baby.

Basing it off of the fact that i have one. 07 5.7. It's a 7000lb truck and a gas hog.. True Dodge has a issue also but i think that was in the Hemi. You have to be lucky to get 14-15 in the city and maybe 19 on the highway without a load.

Re: Truck question.

Just a reminder of what you posted last October: :)

I take issue with making payments on a truck I don't use every day. I would rather make payments on a daily driver and have the toy hauler paid for if its not going to get used much.

And I'm getting between 18-20 in mixed driving with my '13 which is what the OP was asking about. I got somewhere around 17-19 in mixed driving with my '07. Shave some lead off that foot of yours ;)
