I’ve been trying to hone my skills at fly fishing this summer. I dug out an old inflatable fishing boat that I had years ago and a few patches and she was ready to go. I caught about 6 yesterday evening in a local lake. The biggest was 2 lb 10 oz. Here’s a picture

Been fly fishing since I was a kid. Dad and my brother and I fished around the AuSable River in Michigan, and now I fish a couple of the rivers in TN.

Looks like a nice brown.

Yeah, its a brown trout. They get pretty big around here, esp. the sea run ones. What kind of fish do you get in those Tn. rivers?

Brook trout are the natives, but we have Brown, Rainbow and Cut Throat. I've caught all except the Cut Throat. Nothing huge for me, but I heard of some pretty good size fish. - You can also run into most of your normal freshwater stuff like bass, catfish, etc.

Tried fishing the Smokies in Gatlinburg last year: that was a lot more difficult than I expected, but it was fun. I mostly fish in the mid-state.

Used to head up the Lake Ontario every Spring to fish for Steelhead.

Caught this 27.5”, #8.5 Brown in the process.

I didn't realize brook trout were down that far south. They are the most common trout here and the only native trout, the browns and rainbows are introduced. No bass or anything else here except trout and salmon in fresh water.

Brookies I think are native even down into Georgia. If you ever get the chance to fish in the Great Smokey Mountains, take it. It's difficult fishing (thought I was gonna' break a hip trying to wade it), but it's beautiful country to be in - regardless if you catch something. But those are more "quality" trout waters without many more species in there.

The areas I fish are tailwaters off the impound dams. The rivers are larger and pool up quite a bit, and you see a wider variety of fish.

@dingbat that's a pretty fish. I'd flip to get something like that on the line. Supposedly one of the areas I fish has some big ones like that. But I've never gotten anything that size.

I understand from the locals that they get much larger but…having grown up hand lining trout in the small creek behind the house, that was a fish of a lifetime. Only fish I’ve ever had mounted

Much larger. Locally recorded 18lbs. I used to try my luck with 2-4wieght 12' rods on open deep water. Hooked many, landed few. Had great fun with Skamania bows here for a couple years before they vanished. Casting cleo's and crocks with the same light gear in deep open water. Early mornings seen them ripping the surface like torpedo's. Just hold on and watch the Tarpon type fight on the end of your line. 4lb Ande green back then. They never went far, but if you tried to stop them they'd shred 10&12lb line easily. Myself and 2 other local anglers enjoyed some great Skamania fun until others tracked us down. Thats fishin though.
