trouble tuning my 6hp evinrude

have rebuilt it starts first pull but will low speed idle for 15mins or so and die......i am running it in a 50 gal drum with small opening wondering if it dies due to exhaust gasses?
also the carbs rebuilt, new water pump and complete new coils, points,condensers and plugs and compression is 100lbs on both cyl......any thoughts?

Try running a fan near the back of the motor and that will get rid of the exhaust fumes and eliminate that IF that is the problem. Be sure you are running a vent in the fuel tank too.........

runs way better wth cover off but still crapps out

if you squeeze the fuel bulb will it keep running? Could be fuel related, or could be a coil heating up and failing. Does it start right back up after this?

new fuel pump.so not the primer ball.............and yes starts right up again runs for a bit then dies again

You said you're running it in a barrel...right?

Runs better with the cover off.....right?

It is possible the gasket between the powerhead and the exhaust tower may be leaking. It's breathing it's own exhaust fumes.

But, do the simple stuff first:

-Primer bulb in the right direction? Arrow pointed toward engine? A common mistake.

-Fuel tank vented?
