Count your blessings that you have the G80, Eaton locking differential (you don't have the G86 limited slip as you mentioned which came generally on performance suv's where body on frame vehicles are concerned). As for changing the ratio from a possible 3.42 to a 3.73, again count your blessings because if you had 4wd you'd have to change both axles with used out as that is cheaper than just changing the gearing in one. The 4.8 is a bit of a dog and quite honestly never quite understood why it was offered in trucks when the superior 5.3 is right there. I'm still not quite sure what the complaint is other than you feel gravity's affect on a truck that needed a 5.3.
