Trouble Starting, Again - What could it be?

Continuing off a previous post which I cannot find.

Trying to start a 72 Evinrude 50hp --when I first bought it and tried to fire it up, it started with the help of some starter fluid, and then ran well for a few minutes until I shut it down.

A week later I couldn't get it to fire at all, it turned over hard and was trying, but it seemed like a gas problem.

So yesterday I opened up the carb and cleaned the hell out of it, removing some nasty buildup. I purged the jets with compressed air and heard one of them pop clean, as if some dirt finally blew out. We put it back together and tried to start it.

It fired up beautifully right away, without starter spray or anything, the idle was a little rocky and I could hear it smooth out periodically. Then it stalled out. I continued try to start it, it turned and tried to fire many times but just couldn't. Sprayed the carb a bit and then it fired up but VERY HARD, as if the idle was up to high, but it wasn't.

So, I am back to square one, but even more confused now because the carb is very clean, and it still seems like its not getting the gas.

But - is it possible my lean/rich mixture is too far off? The knob is broken so I have to manually adjust i which I just noticed.

Could this be the problem?

I have taken off all the hoses and they look good, the only I didn't check was the one to the gas tank, but that does have brand new gas in it.

Is it possible the gas needs a leaded additive? Ethanol?

I'm lost - and I need this thing ready by Sunday for some Striper fishing..

Any thoughts guys?

When you cleaned the carbs, did you remove the core plug on top of the carbs and clean the passages inside?
Your static setting on the low speed jets should be about 1 1/4 turn out from lightly seated, and the final adjustment with the engine in the water and in gear.
You don't need any additive in your gas, I try and stay away from gas with ethanol in it.

Ok. Where would the low speed jet setting be located exactly -I don't see any adjustment screw on the outside of the carb. I googled the schematics for this motor but it does not point out any adjustment screw..

Where should I be looking..

and --- are you saying I should have the muffs on and in gear while making this adjustment?

What about my lean/rich setting? It was cranked all the way to rich I believe and I didnt realize the dial was broken..

That carb should have a low speed needle located above the carb intake throat.....its in the carb schematic.

You should make any final adjustments in the lake.....static adjustment should be about one and a half turns out from lightly seated but check your manual.

If we could get it running for more than 20 seconds I'd throw it on the lake, but I don't think its ready, its not running well enough to do so..

You didn't list a model number, this is the first one I found. Look at #30, that is the low speed adjustment.

That's exactly why i gave you a static (stopped/bench) setting......at this setting it will run for as long as you want.....fine tuning is done in the lake tied to the dock, not on muffs.

I would change out all fuel lines unless they look new. Old lines will deteriorate internally and throw gunk into your newly clean carbs.

Ok so today I changed took off the fuel line and washed it out, used compressed air to flush it, looks in very good condition. I found the low speed setting and adjusted it.

Put it back together and started it. It needed some starter fluid to fire, then it fired up but very hard and then smoothed out some. It ran for about 30 seconds and then just quit. And again, like the last two times, it would not start up or run from that point, its like after the initial running, it gets even more difficult and will only turn, but won't fire.

This time however there was adecent amount of smoke and it smelled really something dirty. In the past it did not exhibit these things.

Frustrated as hell right now.

What do you guys think?

Don't use starter fluid. It's bad for 2-stroke motors. Premix some gas/oil and put it in a spray bottle....use it as your "starter fluid".

Not trying to be smart alec but you are choking this motor and using the fast idle lever when attempting to start it from cold right?

If you are sure the carb is now clean and well adjusted (low speed/float level) its probably time to move on and start looking at other possible causes.....

Have you tried repriming it after it stalls out before trying to restart it? Have you checked the operation of the fuel pump?

Yes sir, choked the hellout of it, throttled up to keep her going, let down a bit to idle out, then stalls and won't come back to life for crap.

So I adjusted the low speed screw, it was pretty close already, I just moved it a little so its sitting fine right now.

Question is ---aren't I supposed to be able to hear the fuel pump engage when I give it juice? Because.....I don't hear a thing....Did we just hit bullseye? Is it a shot fuel pump, if I can't hear it engage to start?

you won't hear any engagement... at idle,squeeze the bulb that runs from the tank to the fuel pump every 5 or 6 secs. < 1 squeeze at a time > does the engine now idle for longer periods of time?...all this is doing is manually taking over the function of the fuel pump and keeping the carb bowl full...does it idle now, or is it still stalling out after 30 secs?
