changed the impeller today and when I went to put the lower unit back on i had trouble aligning the drive shaft splines. just wouldnt go. i tried to turn the propeller shaft just a little to spin the drive shaft. now when i turn the prop to the right it pops. like its missing the gear?

if i spin it to the left the drive shaft will spin.

does this mean some how i put the lower unit into reverse?

help

im having a helluva time aligning the shift linkage.

i was in neutral when i dropped the l/u. keep it in neutral to replace?

if i spin the prop clockwise it pops. counter it spins the drive shaft

Re: trouble reseating lower unit

finally got that sob back on there. i figured out that if the lower unit was in forward the prop would ratchet clockwise and counterclockwise it would turn the drive shaft. when I finally got it back into neutral, it would spin freely. lesson learned. it does get easier the more you do it, right? :D

one question.... when i dropped the lower unit when i look up inside the middle unit? there seemed to be a lot of sludge type material. wet mud, maybe some lubricant, oil? is that uncommon? or is a little typical, maybe from powering out of a shallow area?

The water intake for the motor cooling is near the prop, and if you run it in the mud there will be mud in the water. The cooling water is discharged down thru the mid section plate, and exhaust area of the midsection. Running the motor in clean water or flushing of the motor should get most of the crud out of the motor after being run in the mud bottom. JMO

Re: trouble reseating lower unit

Good evening fellows,
My buddy came over today to help change the impeller and the thermostats in my 1992 offshore
To our surprised there were no thermostats in place, long story short I broke one of the bolts but was able able to drill and thread a 1/4 20 bolt again.
My concern is, we turned the engine on and it took a while for.the pisser to get water about 5 minutes, but the tempeture never went passed 110. We rev up and it seam to get cooler. The pisser water was hot and seam to get interrupted.....
My buddy thinks is not getting hot enough to open the thermostat at the same time, and the other idea is that the blades in the impeller are not all lpointing back making the stream on and off.
Any ideas before I take it all apart tomorrow.
Thank you in advance from Miami

Re: trouble reseating lower unit

Not running therms will cost you a motor.. I have a 200 in the garage with that scenario...The water is running out of the motor to quickly and what happens is the piston expands faster than the cyinder...read about it.."Cold Seizing"....the piston scuffs and damages the cylinder...major cost to fix.....You need to get the therms back in quickly..water should pump out in about 15-30 seconds..5 minutes and you have either burned up the impeller or the water discharge is blocked which happens all of the time...stick something small in the pisser hole to make sure it is clear....drop the lower unit to make sure you impeller didn't go bye-bye...Good Luck......
