trouble getting reverse.

Water in the bellows: Inspect the bellows very well, looking for any checks/cracks especially when the bellhousing is lifted. If this is new to you and unknown service history, would recommend replacing driveshaft, shift, and less importantly exhaust bellows. Replace the shift shaft bushing. Replace the shift cable. Inspect the u joints closely, replace if there is excess play/not smooth/rust. Check gimbal bearing. Replace if it doesn't turn smoothly. Check alignment. Get Mercruiser shop manual.

All of that is a solid day, maybe 2 if you haven't done it before or if you run into issues.
all the bellows are in good shape, no leaks i can find, bearing is good only place that seems where there is a problem is where shift cable is there is alot of corrosion powder like builds up on battery cable, waiting for dark to shine light in to see if i can see light anywhere

can not find any cracks in bellows they still feel pliable and gimble i can turn with just pushing end of newspaper in and it is smooth and easy no rust on shaft or gimble, hose is cut off which goes into back i hooked garden hose onto fed and see water comes out both sides of nuckle, would motor need to run to see water come out of nipple that goes to hose which is cut off, thanking u in advance for whatever help u can give

looking at kits to replace gimble bearing and bellows does alpha 1 gen 1 have a seal for bearing. kits i am looking at do not

will not quit, impeller done, waiting for gimble bearing, then shift cable hoping all goes well with a little help

Based on the photo in the post quoted here it would seem the sea water pump in the drive isn't supplying cooling water to the engine. You mention the hose is cut and appears from the photo it has been so for a while. Is there a sea water pump mounted on the engine? A through hull sea water supply? Post some pics of the engine/bilge area

Previous photos of the bell housing indicate water intrusion into the shift slide pocket from failed shift shaft bushing/seals in the bell housing

there is a sea pump on motor previous owner hooked up so u can hook up garden hose to start on land there is a tru the hull fitting, but what are u saying now about shift shaft bushing seal in bell housing

looked it up is gen 1 and gen 2 alpha shift shaft bushing seal the same find lots for gen 2 none for gen 1

looked it up is gen 1 and gen 2 alpha shift shaft bushing seal the same find lots for gen 2 none for gen 1
The gen 1 was replaced by the gen 2 part. You need both the bushing and seal, old bushing needs pressed out and new one pressed in

When you run a belt driven raw water pump on an alpha , you are supposed to cut the water supply hose in the bellows area. The drive impeller still needs to be maintained to push water through the drive to cool it. Usually this is done if closed cooling is added.

are u saying hose in bellows being cut is ok never over heated last year and i put new impeller in so figure this will be better then last yr

If you are running a engine driven sea water pump with a through hull fitting for water pick up, then yes you want the hose to be cut in bellows area so impeller in drive is pushing water through the drive and out the cut hose to cool it.

Engine driven pump will cool the engine separately.
